我的GS四川大学2009年考博作文样文—Dreams

Life is certainly a matter of let-go or hold-fast. Langston Hughes’ little poem actually awakens me to the powerful side of hold-fast of the paradoxical coin of life – to dream to hold fast to life. Flying is a bird’s dream, letting go of which simply breaks its wings and diminishes its aliveness. Growing of all creatures is a field’s dream, relinquishing of which definitely snow-freezes it and reduces it to sterility.  Letting go of dreams, a bird is no longer a bird, a field no longer produces. Holding fast to dreams means making us as fully alive as possible – and as human as possible. (104 words)

Very often stressed is the other side of the life coin. It is argued that life will confront us to a final demise – our death. Then life has to stay tuned to letting go – of dreams. However, albeit an arduous jouney on which we are no strangers to hardships and sufferings, dreams always bear on where soul lies and where life leads us. As I look back upon my past years, I dreamed of going to city when I was a poor country student; I dreamed of sweet and true love when I was terribly hurted by unsuccessful romantic experience; I dreamed of free command of English language to propagate and promulgate some portion of human knowledge to my students, even only to find a very slim chance of securing a teaching position in a university without frequently telling lies. I made it. I am now living a comfortable urban life , having a good family, enjoying a desirable teaching post and the gratifying  activities on the job. Most importantly, I know, the dreams do not pause a moment, carrying my life on and making it better off. (188 words)

When I die, my hands will be loose and, as it were, lose everything that I have been and ever dreamt to be. But I would not hold my life in regret. My wings may have been broken, but I have been flying. My land may have been at times covered with snow, but I have been growing. My thoughts and deeds – and dreams – weave a spectacular pattern, -- for my timeless and unrelenting life. (74 words)

Knowledge vs. Wisdom How to realize my dream?

As the saying goes--Knowledge is powerful; It is never too old to learn etc.. But, do you know, simply equal, knowledge and wisdom have never been and never will be.
Just look at these two Chinese characters “” and “” and there are something seemingly different—the additional component in “智” either conveying the implication “light” represented by “”(ri), or symbolizing “articulation” by “” (yue). Only when knowledge ascends into the wisdom does learning seems to have the significance, more accurate and full, and could characters and sounds be internalized into an organic whole to express our thoughts—peculiar human thoughts!
How interesting the human language is—the indirectness between the signifier and the signified, just as the translation problem, the incommensurability between the source culture and the target one. No words have exhausted meanings!

    To learn is for polishing our thoughts;
To learn is for pursuing the wisdom

    “愚者暗于成事,智者见于未萌” (Sorry I don’t know the exact translation…)

No translation can claim exact accuracy. Then, a trial --

A fool sees not the visible; a sage see the not visible.
A fool ignores; a sage predicts.
A fool is blind to the patent; a sage is mindful of the latent.

Fly High into the Sky!
As a creature, I eat and sleep; as a man, I read and dream. The former serves the needs of my body; the latter, my minds.
The beauty of dream, in my humble opinion, in terms of any human meaning is meaningless; it is the beautiful sound from another world behind and beyond, soaring higher and farther than anyone in the real world dares to dream, and leaves us indefinable longing and regret.
Several classic and profound sentences, from some popular movies, are as follows. Here I also want to share with you, my friends.
“Life is a box of chocolate, and we never know what we are going to get next.” –from Forrest Gump said by Forrest’s mother.《阿甘正传》
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, and now is present (gift)”—from Kongfu Panda said by master tortoise.《功夫熊猫》
“Get busy living or get busy dying.” –from Shawshank’s Redemption said by Andy《肖申克的救赎》
